Automakers have great ideas and come out with some very good concepts but sometimes, they mess them up somewhere in the development stages. There have been many cars that would be huge successes such as the Cadillac Catera that ended up being pieces of crap.
My favorite would have to be the Chevy Aveo which , despite high sales numbers, presumably to enterprise and hertz, was a miserable car and was never up to the level of a Honda fit. There are plenty that are better than mine, so leave those in the comments.

this just failed
and this basically because the execution never occurred
this turned into a lame appearance package instead of a mini-lightning
this never happened
this ended up comparatively bland

An extremely pretty car, ruined by Triumph putting two welded together Dolomite engines in instead of the Rover V8.

Cadillac V-8-6-4. Great idea to save fuel. Sucked in reality.

I’ve got two that come to mind.
The first is the Pontiac Fiero. It was a great concept. Small, sporty mid engined car. The later ones even had Lotus-esque suspension, but they just didn’t have the engine to back up the looks. If only GM had given the car a decent engine it could have been a smash hit.
The second is the Honda CRZ. This should have been a great rebirth of the beloved CRX, but Honda gave it the fuel miser treatment instead. If they were to put the Civic Si motor in there, this car would be wonderful.

That WRX looks so much better than what we got. And it looks like a production car already, not like some concepts where you know they have to tone it down a bit.

This is one of my favorite examples of concept-to-production bummers:
And the production version, which is just an Accord coupe with a crease down the centerline.

The Acura ZDX which would probably sell more today than ever before since “coupe” SUVs have become all the rage.

Jalopnik peddling for Snow Tyres.
Great concept, horrible execution.

The WRX is the prime example in recent memory. The concept looked so good but the implementation ended up looking like a Corolla.

A billion times this. I always feel bad for those poor engineers that are working their asses of on this project.

I’ll say it.
This should have looked nothing like this. Because this ^^^^^ looks nothing like this. Even more than looks, you should have been able to see out of it from inside it.

The original Honda Ridgeline. It’s all the truck most Americans need, but it was so ugly, and so poorly marketed, and even more poorly supported (never got a serious refresh) that it faded into obscurity.
The new Ridgeline, which has all of the same mechanical benefits of the original under a traditional truck wrapper, is much closer to the mark IMHO.
